Chinese Player Pang Renlong Banned 12 Years After 22-Match Fixing Spree

Pang Renlong’s ban reads like a cautionary tale for players chasing small prize money and big temptations.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency has handed down a lengthy suspension and a heavy fine after investigators tied the 25-year-old to corruption across lower-level events, underscoring continued pressure to police the sport’s periphery.

The Case Against Pang Renlong

The ITIA found misconduct spanning a short but intense window, and the details suggest a mixture of outright match-fixing and attempts to recruit others into corrupt schemes during that period.

“Pang admitted to fixing five of his own matches in lower-level events and making “corrupt approaches” to players in 11 more matches, six of which were also fixed.”

The ITIA statement makes the charges stark and specific, and the sanction is equally clear: a suspension that will remove Pang from the professional game for an extended period.

Officials said the activity covered a span of five months, from May through September 2024, and involved events across Turkey, Hong Kong and mainland China, plus an attempted qualifying appearance for the Jinan Open.

The punishment handed to Pang includes a ban of 12 years, a total fine of $110,000 with $70,000 suspended, and a prohibition on playing, coaching or attending events run by major tennis bodies.

What The Numbers Mean For A Career

Pang’s career-high ranking was only 1,316th last year, which helps explain why lower-level events are vulnerable to corruption and why enforcement agencies have made them a focus.

Investigators tied Pang to 22 matches across that five-month period, an unusually concentrated cluster of allegations that suggested more than opportunistic lapses and pointed to organized activity.

The suspension is scheduled to run through 2036 once provisional suspension time is included, effectively sidelining Pang for the lion’s share of his prime years and cutting off official access to the tour.

Broader Context And Ongoing Investigations

This case did not arise in isolation; the ITIA recently announced other major sanctions and named a suspected syndicate that prosecutors and integrity officers continue to pursue across borders and levels of the sport.

Last week the ITIA said French player Quentin Folliot was suspended 20 years for match-fixing and recruiting other players “on behalf of a match-fixing syndicate,” and he was the sixth player linked to that group.

Those linked cases show the networked nature of modern match-fixing, where online contacts and small-event anonymity create opportunities for corrupt operators to influence multiple fixtures quickly.

Enforcement carries real teeth now: bans, fines and bans from attending events are designed to deter would-be fixers and to protect the integrity of results at every level of competition.

For players trying to earn a living outside the top tiers, the ITIA’s message is unambiguous; the short-term gains of fixing a match come with long-term professional exile and financial penalties.

My Tennis Expert believes consistent enforcement and education at lower-tier tournaments are the two most effective tools to reduce corruption risks and to give young players a fair shot at honest progression.
